Golgulsa Temple Stay

Making Dong-ji Patjuk (Red bean porridge)

The day of Dong-ji (winter solstice) is one of the 24 seasonal divisions according to the lunar calendar. It begins the longest night as well as the shortest day.

It means that this year is ending and a new year is beginning.

The ancients believed that the day of Dong-ji was the day the sun revives from death. They held festivals and performed Helios rituals.

In Korea, we eat Red bean porridge on the day of Dong-ji. In our customs, the color of Red bean symbolizes the expulsion of evil spirits and the protection of family members as well as relatives and even neighbors. Because the evil spirits hate the color red.

With this, we make wishes for good luck!

Let's think back in our hectic daily lives and prepare a meaningful new year with a special Dong-ji Darma talk by Golgulsa's abbot. Come join us!
